Despite an encouraging end to the 1999-2000 campaign, Peter had to wait until late October for a first-team appearance in goal for Carlisle. He returned in style, scoring the Cumbrians' second goal in the 3-2 defeat at Blackpool with a huge wind-assisted kick, making him the second Carlisle 'keeper to register a goal in little more than 12 months! Despite this he lost his place soon afterwards and later moved on loan to Darlington as cover for the injured Andy Collett. Peter made his debut for the Quakers in the defeat at Barnet but then rapidly grew in confidence and was only on the losing side once in seven games before Collett returned to the line-up.
Peter was released by Carlisle at the end of the 2001-02 season but subsequently agreed a new three-year contract.
