Abbott was born in York but moved to Poland with his family when he was eleven.
He signed for Lodz in the summer of 2000 but could not break into the first team and was signed by Preston North End for £125,000 in February 2001.
After a successful loan spell, Abbott joined Huddersfield Town in March 2004 with a contract to June 2007.
He joined Swansea City in January 2007 with a contract to June 2009.
Abbott joined Darlington in July 2007 with a two-year contract.
He joined Oldham Athletic in July 2009 with a two-year contract.
Abbott joined Charlton Athletic in July 2010 with a two-year contract.
