A striker of precocious if unpredictable talent, he caught the eye of Derby County in 1997 when he was signed from Costa Rican outfit CS Heridiano.
Paulo signed for West Ham in July 1999 for a fee of £3.25million then Manchester City purchased him in the summer for £3.6million.
Infuriating and enigmatic to teammates and opposition alike, on his day can create goals from seemingly impossible situations.
Paulo's highlight in his three appearances in the 2002 World Cup finals was his goal in the enthalling 5-2 defeat by Brazil.
