At the age of 33 Paul took the big step of giving up his full-time job as a warehouse manager for a career as a professional footballer. A former trainee at Shrewsbury he went on to make his Football League debut for Kidderminster against Torquay on the opening day of the 2000-01 campaign and featured regularly for the Harriers in the first half of the season. He was then one of several players put on the transfer list by manager Jan Molby last January but forced his way back into the team and scored his only goal of the season with a 20-yard drive in the 3-1 win over local rivals Cheltenham in April.

Paul joined Evesham after leaving Kidderminster, and announced his retirement in July 2002.
