Smith again served Gillingham as club captain in 2000-01 and his midfield performances went from strength to strength during the course of the season.
Although not the fastest of players, his value is in his quickness in both feet and thought, and his excellent close control.
He missed several games early on in the campaign, but returned in mid-September and was an ever present until the end, during which time he made his 200th appearance for the Gills.
He was deservedly named as the club's 'Player of the Year'.
Smith joined Walsall in July 2005 with a two-year contract.
He joined Torquay United in January 2007 with a contract to the end of the season.
