Paul Smith was understudy to Olafur Gottskalksson as Brentford goalkeeper in 2000-01.
He made two brief appearances in the first team from the subs' bench, coming on for the final five minutes of the league game at Bury in January, and playing the final half hour of the LDV Vans Trophy Southern Area final when he achieved instant hero status with the Bees' fans by making a miraculous save to deny Southend an equaliser.
Paul agreed a new two-year deal with Brentford in July 2003 but was transferred to Southampton in January 2004 with a contract to June 2008.
He joined Nottingham Forest in July 2006 with a three-year contract that was extended to June 2010 in July 2008 and to June 2012 in December 2009.
Paul joined Southend United in August 2012 with a two-year contract that was extended to June 2015 in June 2014 and to June 2016 in July 2015.
