At the age of 40, Paul made a brief return to Southend United in December 2001. He provided cover for youngster Danny Gay while regular keeper Darryl Flahaven was unavailable due to suspension. Paul played for Gravesend & Northfleet after leaving the Shrimpers in 1997.
