Paul returned to English football last summer after playing in China for Huang Dong Vanguards and Shengzhen following his departure from Everton in 1997. He put his plans to move into coaching on hold as he elected to join Tranmere Rovers shortly before the start of the 2000-01 campaign. He showed his versatility by appearing both as a striker and in a midfield role and despite his advancing years produced several 'Man of the Match' performances. Undoubtedly the high point of his campaign came in the FA Cup fifth round replay against Southampton when he netted a stunning hat-trick as Rovers fought back from a three-goal deficit to win 4-3.
