After leaving Leyton Orient, Paul played for Stevenage Borough, Kettering Town and Ilkeston Town before joining Boston United in February 2000.

The Pilgrims also retained his playing registration when he returned to York Street two years later as first team coach. Paul had been employed on the coaching staff at Sheffield United for the previous five years.
