After trials at Scunthorpe United and Darlington during the 2000 summer break, Paul had a brief spell with Sheffield Wednesday before joining Hull City in September.
He became an instant hit with the Tigers' supporters after saving a penalty on his debut in the 1- 1 draw at Barnet and went on to become the first-choice goalkeeper at Boothferry Park, producing a series of outstanding performances.
He played a crucial role in helping the club reach the Play-Offs and this was recognised when he received the 'Young Tigers' Player of the Year' award.
Paul's contract at Lincoln City was extended to June 2011 in April 2010.
