Mitchell stepped up to sign a full professional contract for Wigan Athletic in July 2000 but found his first-team opportunities at the JJB Stadium very limited.
He was eventually allowed to join Third Division Halifax Town on loan in March 2001 where he filled in admirably at right back in the closing months of the campaign.
He is a hard-tackling defender or midfielder with excellent distribution.
After a loan spell, Mitchell joined Milton Keynes Dons in July 2005 with a two-year contract.
His Dons contract was extended to December 2008 in June 2008.
Mitchell reited due to knee and ankle injuries in January 2009.
In addition to the yellow cards totals shown below, as an unused sub, Mitchell was booked during Milton Keynes Dons' League One game against Bristol City on 10 March 2006 following an incident on the touchline.
