Paul McCarthy had his best season to date with Wycombe Wanderers in 2000-01, forming an effective partnership with Jamie Bates in the centre of a back four and the pair then joining Jason Cousins in a formidable three-man defence later on.

A brave and, strong central defender with great anticipation, he put on a great performance in the FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool.

He also proved to be very effective when joining the attack at set pieces and netted a remarkable five goals in FA Cup ties, including a dramatic 119th-minute equaliser in the fifth round replay at Wimbledon.

Paul was runner-up to the outstanding Martin Taylor in the club's Player of the Season award.

He was released by Wycombe in May 2003, and joined Oxford United in a one-year deal.
