McAreavey spent three months on loan with League of Ireland outfit Kilkenny City last season before returning to Swindon in spectacular fashion. Given a place on the subs' bench due to shortage of numbers, he was sent on to assist a side struggling to retain a 1-0 lead over Oldham and he subsequently transformed the match by scoring within two minutes of his arrival. He featured in a handful more games towards the end of the campaign and was reported to have signed a new 12-month contract in the summer.
