After being on the substitutes' bench for Rotherham United during the opening month of the 2000-01 campaign, Paul was promoted to the starting line-up at the beginning of September and seized his opportunity to retain his place for the rest of the season.

He mainly featured on the left side of midfield although he is equally at home at left back, and surprised everyone when he out-jumped much taller opponents to head a vital winner against Colchester United in February.

Paul's contract at Rotherham United was extended to June 2008 in July 2006.
