Holland began the 2000-01 campaign in impressive form for Bristol City and scored with a header in the 2-0 victory at Wrexham in the opening game. However after just half-a-dozen first-team outings he suffered a serious knee injury that brought his season to a very early conclusion. An experienced midfield player he combined creative touches with a degree of bite in the centre of the park. Due to his knee injury, Holland was forced to retire in January 2002 and returned to Mansfield Town to become youth coach.
