After years spent in the shadows at Goodison Park, Paul was unquestionably first-choice goalkeeper for Everton in 2000-01.
He was involved in one of the more bizarre incidents of the season when West Ham United striker Paolo Di Canio chose to catch the ball rather than strike it at an unguarded net after Paul had collapsed with a knee injury.
As soon as he was fit again, he was restored instantly to the starting line-up.
An outstanding shot stopper, he made a crucial penalty save in the home match with Bradford City which ultimately preserved Everton's Premiership place for another season.
He attracted some criticism for occasional lapses of concentration, a flaw he has worked relentlessly at ironing out of his game.
Paul joined Nottingham Forest in July 2004 with a two-year contract.
He joined Sheffield United in September 2006 in a four-month deal.
Paul's Blades contract was extended to June 2008 in August 2007.
