An unassuming Londoner, Paul gave 16 years of fine service to Arsenal's midfield after signing pro forms at Highbury in 1979. Injuries and uncharacteristic disciplinary problems sidelined him for much of the 1988-89 Championship success so his near ever-present involvement in the 1990-91 success was all the more enjoyable. Gunner's silverware also followed in the European Cup Winners Cup, FA Cup and League for a player who profited from fine control and precision passing. Paul made a total of 445 appearances before joining Brentford in 1995.
