Paul was given his chance in the Newcastle front line at the start of the 1999-00 season due to him impressing in United's pre-season games in Duncan Ferguson's injury absence. He scored his only goal in a UEFA Cup draw against CSKA Sofia.
This Wimbledon striker began 2000-01 on the subs' bench at Selhurst Park and found it difficult to settle at his new club. In October he moved on loan to First Division rivals Burnley but he was again restricted to a role as substitute and he returned south after the Clarets signed Ian Moore. Still unable to break into the Dons team he spent time on loan with Dundee United in the New Year where he made a handful of appearances. Used predominantly as a right-sided striker Paul can be a handful for any defender on his day.
