Boertien did well in Derby County's reserves in 2000-01 and earned a call-up for his Premiership debut against Sunderland in March as a replacement for the injured Seth Johnson.
He gave an impressive performance that day and suspensions later on in the campaign meant he played a key role in the closing matches.
He was particularly outstanding in the home game with Leicester City when he scored a goal and was voted 'Man of the Match', and also in the vital game at Old Trafford.
Boertien's contract at Derby County was extended to June 2007 in February 2005.
He joined Walsall in July 2007 with a one-year contract that was extended to June 2009 in January 2009.
Boertien's contract at Burton Albion was extended to June 2011 in May 2010 and to June 2012 in May 2011 before he announced his retirement in December 2011.
