Approaching the veteran stage of his career, Paul Barnes was never able to hold down a regular place in the Bury line-up during the 2000-01 campaign. A hamstring injury in early October caused a brief lay-off and although he returned to the side he found himself largely relegated to the subs' bench in the second half of the season. He subsequently moved on loan to Conference outfit Nuneaton Borough in March where he enjoyed some success scoring 10 goals in just nine games. Paul is a hard working striker with a proven record as a goal-scorer throughout his career.

Shortly after their return to the Football League, Paul agreed a new one-year deal with Doncaster Rovers in May 2003 but was made available for transfer in December 2003.
