At the end of a traumatic few months, Patrick travelled to the Far East for the 2002 World Cup with the aim of putting previous troubles behind him.

The young striker went on the transfer list at First Division Sheffield United in March after being one of three players sent-off in a game infamously dubbed 'The Battle of Bramhall Lane'.

He was dismissed after clashing with a West Bromwich Albion defender in a match that had to be abandoned as the Blades went down to six men with eight minutes remaining.

He spent the rest of the season loaned out to Numancia, later completing the permanent move to the Spanish club.

Having missed much of the 1999-2000 campaign while under suspension at Nantes following a clash with a referee, Patrick's career recovered when appearing for the gold medal Cameroon team in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

He has also gained African Nations Cup honours.

In keeping with his recent experiences, Patrick's World Cup ended when he was sent-off after coming on in Cameroon's final game against Germany.

It was part of the sixteen yellow and two red cards that were shown in a new World Cup record.

Patrick returned to England in July 2003 to join Coventry City but his contract was cancelled in January 2005.
