Although born in Cameroon, Patrick was brought up in France.
It was not until a move to Japan that he began to fulfil his full potential when he finished leading scorer in the J-League in 1997 with 25 goals for Gamba Osaka, and in the summer of 1998 he was transferred to Serie A club Cagliari.
He subsequently moved on to Parma in the 2000 close season but struggled to win a regular place in the starting line-up in his first campaign.
His chances became even more limited, so took the opportunity to join Sunderland on loan in February 2002, chiefly as cover for the injured Niall Quinn.
An inspirational striker capable of scoring spectacular goals, he netted six times in six qualifying games for Japan and South Korea including a hat-trick in the 3-0 win in Libya, and netted Cameroon's first goal of the finals in the 1-1 draw with Ireland.
Patrick was a member of the teams that won both the 2000 African Nations Cup and the Sydney Olympics, capping a fine personal year when he was selected as the CAF African Footballer of the Year.
