Still only 21 he is highly regarded by Bruno Metsu. He began his career as a youth at Saint Etienne and after a spell at Istres he moved to play for Lausanne in Switzerland at the start of the 2000-2001 season. He made his international debut in January 2001 against Uganda where he scored on his debut. He was banned for twelve matches this season after an incident in the tunnel against Servette where he claimed he retaliated after suffering racial abuse. He returned to action and moved to Strasbourg on loan in February 2002 prior to the African Nations' Cup Finals. He played in four of the matches but the team's failure to score goals led to him losing his place in the Final. Many observers see him as the ideal partner for El Hadji Diouf being the target man for his lethal partner.
