Began his career at domestic club Wanderers where his performances made him a member of Victor Pua's 1997 World Youth Cup Finals side. His performances earned him a move to play for Atletico Madrid in Spain for the 1997-1998 season. He broke into the Uruguay first team soon after making his debut in December 1997 against the United Arab Emirates. Despite not breaking into the Atletico first team he remained in the national team. He returned home to play for Penerol on loan in 1998 before returning to Atletico where he played for the B team for three seasons before joining Inter Milan midway through the 2000-2001 season. He again failed to break into the first team and left to join Venezia midway through this season. Despite his lack of first team action he was one of the best performers in qualification and is certain to start. He is a tough no nonsense central midfield player who has a cultured left foot.
