Turkey's third-choice keeper at Euro 2000 was promoted to understudy for the long-serving Rustu Recber at the 2002 World Cup finals.
Omer spent his youth at Eskisehir before joining Gaziantepspor in 1997.
Following criticism by chairman Celal Dogan, he had become second choice to Fevzi Tuncay at Gaziantep but returned to the team in the latter stages of the 2001-02 season.
Omer made his international debut against Holland in February 2001, and impressed in a 0-0 draw.
Due to his shaven headed features, he is fondly known as Barthez Omer.
