Unable to get a game at Sunderland, Nicky eventually joined Bolton Wanderers in January 2001 and although it was apparent that he was lacking match fitness he was soon pitched into first-team action. Not surprisingly he took some time to settle down, but he gradually won over the Wanderers' fans with a string of quality displays. While never the toughest of competitors, his qualities lie in his skill on the ball, and an ability to supply some breathtaking crosses into the penalty area. An important player for Wanderers in the final months of the season as he helped the team to a place in the Premiership via the play-offs, he was out of contract in the summer and his future at the time of writing was unclear.
Nicky joined Bradford City in September 2003 on a two-year contract. He returned to Swindon Town in August 2005 on non-contract terms. Nicky joined Tranmere Rovers in September 2005 with a four-month contract.
