Wright had another very frustrating time at Watford in 2000-01 and managed only one senior appearance, featuring in the Worthington Cup second round second leg tie against Notts County. He underwent a groin operation during the 2000 close season and then picked up a knee injury that proved troublesome as the joint kept swelling up as he fought to regain match fitness. A hard-working right-sided midfielder with a good eye for goal he has hardly played at all in the last two seasons and is long overdue a change in fortune.
Wright's continuing problems with his knee injury forced him to announce his retirement from senior football in March 2003.
