Cusack began the 2000-01 season playing in the unaccustomed role of striker for Swansea alongside Steve Watkin before reverting to a more familiar midfield holding role midway through the campaign. He was rarely absent from the squad apart from a period in April when he picked up a hamstring injury at Bristol Rovers and by the time he had returned to action the Swans had been relegated. A hard-working player who links well between attack and defence when playing in the centre of the park, he signed an extension to his contract that is likely to see him remain with the Swans for the rest of his playing career.
When Cusack was relieved of his duties as Swansea City's player / manager in September 2002, he declined the offer to continue in a playing capacity.
