Colgan played for Chelsea in a single game, against West Ham United in March 1997.
His contract at Barnsley was extended to June 2008 in July 2006 before he was made available for transfer in January 2008 when he joined Ipswich Town with a contract to the end of the season.
Colgan joined Sunderland in July 2008 with a one-year contract.
After a loan spell, he joined Huddersfield Town in January 2011 with a contract to June 2011 that was extended to June 2012 in June 2011.
