The vastly experienced midfield player was placed on the transfer list by new Wigan Athletic boss Bruce Rioch at the start of the 2000-01 season and was restricted to infrequent appearances in the first team.
He moved on to join Halifax Town as player-coach shortly before the transfer deadline and featured regularly for the Shaymen proving a steadying influence in the closing stages of the campaign as they successfully fought to retain their Football League status in 2001.
Unfortuately, the Shaymen returned to the Conference a year later but Neil made an immediate return with League new boys Boston United, again as player / coach.
He left York Street shortly after manager Neil Thompson's dismissal in February 2004 before joining Rochdale on non-contract terms.
