Now entering the twilight of his career, Neil managed just a single appearance for Middlesbrough in 2000-01, appearing as a substitute in the Worthington Cup Third Round tie at Wimbledon.
In November, he joined Barnsley on a month's loan and was just settling in when he injured his groin in training and returned to the Teesside club.
He later joined Bristol City on loan for the final two months of the campaign to provide experienced cover after an injury to Brian Tinnion.
He produced a stunning goal in the 2-2 draw with Oldham Athletic at the end of March but failed to make the expected impact at Ashton Gate and returned to the Riverside.
Out of contract in the summer, he signed for Darlington - his home town club.
A tireless worker in the centre of midfield, he is always willing to take the ball off the defence and start building from the back, while he regularly gets in scoring positions when he moves up to join the attack.
Neil's contract at Darlington was extended to June 2006 in May 2005.
