A former England youth international and third-choice keeper at Aston Villa behind David James and Peter Enckelman, Neil spent two months at Second Division Oxford United in 2000 to gain some valuable experience of first-team football.
He had the difficult task of replacing fans' favourite Richard Knight at a time when the team were enduring a poor patch of results but he stuck to his task well producing some good performances before returning to Villa Park.
An excellent shot stopper, Neil was made available for transfer by Stoke City in February 2004.
He joined Stockport County in July 2004 in a two-year deal but was made available for transfer in May 2005.
