Bernard is the son of a former Bristol rugby union player and was named after 1970s soul star Bernard Michael Walden. He featured regularly in the Arsenal U19 Academy team in 1999-2000 before moving on to Second Division Bournemouth in the close season. He went on to make his senior debut for the Cherries in the FA Cup tie against Swansea and enjoyed a short run in the first-team squad in the new year. A promising youngster he can play either at left back or on the left-hand side of midfield.

After a brief stay at Plainmoor, Bernard was released by Torquay United in January 2004.
