Although now in the twilight of his career Mitchell remained a commanding presence in a Burnley defence that was the key to the side's First Division success in 2000-01. Usually employed on the right of a back three playing alongside Steve Davis and Ian Cox he presented a formidable barrier to opposing attackers, his defensive soundness more than compensating for any lack of pace. Mitchell enjoys going forward but has yet to score his first goal for the Clarets. He was an automatic choice until a rib injury put him briefly out of action towards the end of the season.
