Mike Newell

This experienced striker provided useful cover at Blackpool for the club's regular front men Brett Ormerod and John Murphy. Although now in the closing stages of his career he still showed that he could hold the ball up well and act as an effective target man. Mike spent two months out following a cartilage operation in the autumn of 2000 and once he had recovered fitness he was restricted to occasional outings from the bench. He made around 650 appearances for his various clubs before deciding to announce his retirement from the game.

Having become manager at Luton Town, as the club was in administration and had restricted transfer activity, Mike re-registered as a player in November 2003 to provide possible cover due to injuries.
