Having effectively retired from playing at the end of the 1999-2000 campaign Mike was appointed youth-team manager at Oxford United in the close season but was forced back into action by an injury crisis at the Manor Ground. He made a single first-team appearance at full back against Bristol City in September, putting on a competent display before returning to the back room. Soon afterwards he was appointed caretaker-manager following Dennis Smith's departure and he had a second brief spell in charge of team affairs at the very end of the season when he was responsible for introducing several youngsters into senior football.
Having lost his coaching role at Oxford, Mike joined Thame United in February 2003.
