Silvestre started his career at Rennes before moving to Italy with Inter Milan for the 1998-99 season.
He had been a youth international and had played at Under-21 level for France but failed to establish himself as a regular at Inter Milan and Manchester United swooped to sign him in September 1999.
Silvestre made his international debut in February 2000 against Germany.
A versatile player, being able to play at centre back or left back.
He is also a danger at set-pieces with his heading ability.
Silvestre's contract at Manchester United was extended to June 2009 in August 2006.
He joined Arsenal in August 2008 with a two-year contract.
