Svensson started his career in the lower divisions at Skillingaryds before moving to IFK Varnamo in the Swedish Second Division, where he played for four seasons, making his debut in 1993 before joining Halmstad in 1997.
They won the domestic championship in 2000 and his performances earned him his international debut in March 2000 against Austria.
His strong performances earned him a move to Troyes in France in the summer of 2001.
A good old-fashioned stopper, he was signed by Southampton in the summer of 2002 and extended his contract with the Saints to June 2007 in June 2006.
Having been without a club throughout the 2007-08 season due to a knee injury, Svensson re-signed for Southampton in August 2008 before announcing his retirement in June 2009 due to injury.
