Gray enjoyed an excellent season with Sunderland in 2000-01 when he was one of the club's most consistent players and rarely missed a match.

Officially appointed team captain following the retirement of Steve Bould, he wasted no time in announcing how proud he was to be leading his home-town club and his displays certainly reflected this.

A pacy left back who was always willing to fly down the wing, he produced some particularly fine performances during the season's 'derby' matches, supplying a brilliant pinpoint cross for Niall Quinn to head home the winner at St James Park against Newcastle United and then firing home the only goal of the game against Middlesbrough at the Stadium of Light - his only success of the campaign.

Gray joined Blackburn Rovers in January 2004 with a contract to June 2006 which was extended to June 2007 in May 2006.

He joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in July 2007 with a one-year contract that was extended to June 2009 in August 2008.

After a loan spell, Gray joined Sheffield Wednesday in February 2009 with a contract to the end of the season that was extended to June 2010 in May 2009.
