Capleton started 2000-01 as second-choice 'keeper at Southend United but managed just one appearance from the subs' bench when he came on for the injured Andy Woodman against Halifax, before he suffered a badly broken leg playing in a reserve match against Brentford. The injury put him out of action for a lengthy period and it was not until the final weeks of the campaign that he resumed full training once more.
