Jones was very much on the fringes of the Leeds United first-team squad at the beginning of the 2000-01 campaign but after playing in the Premiership game at Leicester City in December, he moved on to the Filbert Street club shortly afterwards. Seen by boss Peter Taylor as a potential long-term replacement for Neil Lennon in the central midfield anchor role, he looked particularly impressive on his debut against Charlton Athletic. Although his form dipped at times, he was inspirational in the FA Cup victory over Bristol City and clearly has plenty of natural ability. Jones continued to appear for Wales and suffered a foot injury in the World Cup qualifier against Ukraine in March, but he returned to action for the last couple of games of the season.
Jones, who was made available for transfer by Leicester City in May 2004, announced his retirement a month later due to a back injury.
