Clarke played in every game for Bradford City in 2000-01 until he was dropped by manager Jim Jeffries shortly before Christmas. A transfer request followed and in March he joined Bolton in a loan deal until the end of the season. At the time Wanderers had something of a goalkeeping crisis and Clarke quickly took advantage of the situation. He started the away game at Wimbledon and then held his position for the remainder of the campaign producing some fine displays in the play-offs to help the club through to the Premiership. A big, strong, imposing 'keeper he is very confident and commands his area well.
Clarke was forced to retire due to a knee injury in April 2004.
