Having recovered from a serious knee injury suffered in the 1999-200 season, Mateo joined Barnsley in September 2000 and had a baptism of fire on his debut against Fulham. He recovered from that mauling to become a favourite of the fans at Oakwell and his defence-splitting pass that allowed Bruce Dyer to net the only goal against Sheffield Wednesday will be long remembered.

An experienced left back who also featured on the left side of midfield, he showed some neat touches with his passing but fell out of favour following a change in management and spent most of the second half of the campaign in the reserves.

Mateo returned to England in January 2005 when he joined Oxford United with a contract to the end of the season.
