He began his career at local side Nacional in 1996 where his performances earned him a first international cap in July 1999 against Columbia in the Copa America. He left Nacional to play for Roma in the 2000-2001 season but has failed to become a regular member of the team. On the international stage his versatility have made him an integral part of the team, playing at left back or on either flank.
