Having previously been only on the fringes of the Blackburn Rovers' first-team squad, Martin emerged in 2000-01 as deputy to Craig Short in the centre of the defence and even kept him out of the team for a while.
Tall and powerfully built, he added a degree of steel to his play, while he remained very comfortable on the ball.
He also developed something of a reputation as a goalscorer, netting three times in the First Division and also adding one in the FA Cup win over Chester City when he was in particularly impressive form.
Martin made his debut for England Under-21s in the end-of-season game against Mexico.
Martin joined Birmingham City in January 2004 with a contract to June 2007 that was extended to June 2010 in April 2007.
He joined Watford in January 2010 with a contract to June 2012.
Martin joined Sheffield Wednesday in August 2012 with a two-year contract.
