Pringle is a tall, quick striker who had the misfortune to suffer a frustrating time in the 2000-01 season when he was plagued with persistent injury problems. Effective in the air and with sufficient pace to enable him to beat defenders to through balls he also has fine vision and an excellent work rate. He started only one Premiership game, against Liverpool at Anfield, but made several appearances from the subs' bench and came on to score the winning goal against Chelsea at The Valley. He suffered injury again in 2001-2002 when he suffered a broken leg while on loan at Grimsby Town (in the match against Stockport County) to gain match fitness, and this injury ruled him out for the rest of the season.
