One of the vital members of the Birmingham City team, Martin had a solid campaign in 2000-01 and could always be relied on to provide 100 per cent effort for the cause. An experienced midfield player he strikes the ball sweetly with his left foot and is always a danger from set pieces, his tally of eight last season putting him among the Blues' leading scorers. The high point of his campaign was appearing in the team that was so narrowly defeated by Liverpool in the Worthington Cup final at Cardiff's Millenium Stadium. He was honoured by his fellow professionals when he was selected for the PFA's First Division team in April.

Martin was forced to announce his retirement due to a knee injury in December 2004.
