Having created a great impact at Ipswich Town in the closing stages of the 1999-2000 campaign, Martijn found it difficult to repeat this in 2000-01 and in the first half of the season he was mainly used as a substitute.
It was not until the final third of the campaign that he established himself in the side and he proved his worth by scoring six goals in those 11 games.
Capable of playing anywhere in midfield or as an outright striker, he is an expert striker of a dead ball, whether a corner or a free-kick.
He scored twice in the 3-1 win against Bradford, one an individual run in which he beat three defenders before curling the ball into the net, the second direct from a free-kick, and he then struck the only goal of the game at West Ham United with a curling free-kick.
However, perhaps his most significant goal was the header from Alun Armstrong's cross in the closing stages of the game against Manchester City that sealed his opponents' relegation to Division One.
Martijn was made available for transfer by Ipswich Town in April 2003.
