German international Markus chose to exercise his option to leave Bayern Munich on a Bosman free transfer to join Liverpool. His decision proved to have been a good one as he quickly went on to win two domestic cup winners medals and a UEFA Cup winners medal in his first season with the club.
Primarily a central defender, Markus fitted into the Liverpool formation at right back, due to Vegard Heggem's long-term injury, and he filled the position with distinction. He was adept at creeping forward on the blind side of defenders at corners and free kicks and scoring with headers, most notably the opening goal of the UEFA Cup Final against Deportivo Alaves. Unfortunately Markus went down with Guillan Barre Syndrome and after apparently recovering, frustratingly found his opportunities limited. He went on loan to Blackburn for a season before joining Vfb Stuttgart.
