A skilful central defender who is particularly dangerous at set pieces, Marko started his senior career with Union Berlin. He moved on to Hansa Rostock in 1996 before joining his present club Hertha Berlin in 1999.
He made his debut for Germany against Malta in September 1998 and is now a regular in the squad, having featured in all his country's qualifying games for the 2002 World Cup finals and was rated by many as the teams most consistent player. A tall uncompromising centre half that can play as a right wing back he has recovered from a serious knee injury.
